Canada’s minister of international trade Maninder Sidhu said China was the country’s second-largest trading partner and highlighted opportunities for cooperation in areas where the two economies had complementary...

Laos private jet bust reveals how Mekong meth slips past borders

A private jet hired from Malaysia – seemingly destined for the Philippines – but stopped on the tarmac by Laos’ drug police who found suitcases stuffed with 512kg of crystal methamphetamine, has returned the spotlight to the unrelenting flow of narcotics from the Mekong’s drug laboratories. Cyberscams have dominated headlines and authorities’ attention across Southeast Asia for over a year as the leading criminal enterprise worth tens of billions of dollars annually. But methamphetamine – in its...

As Negeri Sembilan royal crisis persists, Malaysian rulers, government urged to step in

Malaysia’s powerful Conference of Rulers and the government need to intervene and find a solution to the months-long royal stand-off in Negeri Sembilan and constitutional limbo over the status of the state’s ruler, according to political analysts. Negeri Sembilan’s royal house has been locked in a bitter deadlock since April over whether incumbent Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir or his proposed replacement, Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar, is the rightful ruler. The feud has taken down a state...

Indonesians urge Singapore, Malaysia to sue Jakarta as haze blankets region

Every time Kristaen Albert returns home, he reaches for one of the dozen cans of oxygen on a table by the entrance of his house in Central Kalimantan. The air in his neighbourhood has turned dusty amber, with air quality far exceeding hazardous levels. “My breathing is noticeably heavier whenever I step outside. It’s hard to concentrate and stay focused, and it is really affecting my work,” Albert, a 31-year-old software engineer, told This Week in Asia. “Living in this haze is awful.” “The...

Sea and Google open chapter two of their AI pact before chapter one ships

Google has been busy making friends in Singapore. On 7 October, its AI Futures Fund teamed up with Granite Asia to write cheques of up to US$2 million into Asian AI startups. AI can increase productivity. It can’t increase human capacity

We may be using AI to save hours of work, only to fill those hours with more work. This is something I have been thinking about as organisations accelerate their investment in AI. The productivity opportunity is undeniable. Generative AI can draft in seconds, analyse large volumes of information, automate administrative work and give leaders […] The post AI can increase productivity. AI and inflation are driving Singapore’s workplace anxiety. Employers are spending on the wrong fix

Most Singapore office workers know the ritual. A message lands at 10.47pm. It is not urgent. You answer it within 90 seconds anyway, not because the work demands it, but because you want someone to notice that you answered it within 90 seconds. It turns out that performance is playing to a near-empty theatre. The […] The post AI and inflation are driving Singapore’s workplace anxiety.
