I still work 40 hours a week. AI turns it into 120

I teach people how to use AI for a living. So you would expect me to tell you it does everything. It doesn’t. What it does is take a huge amount of the grind out of my week, as long as I stay in the loop. Most of what I have learned came from AI […] The post I still work 40 hours a week. Malaysia’s US$110M startup bet has a matching problem, investors warn

Malaysia has found the money for its startups again. The harder part, investors say, is finding everything that is supposed to come with it. In his Budget 2027 speech on 9 October, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Khazanah’s Jelawang Capital and KWAP’s Dana Perintis would invest MYR450 million (US$110.4 million) in startups. Google may already be showing us its route to AGI

In 2015, Demis Hassabis looked back at a decision he had made more than a decade earlier. As he later put it, “we still didn’t have enough of the components.” Deep learning had not yet […] The post Google may already be showing us its route to AGI appeared first on e27.

Southeast Asian families tying house move to top schools spur privilege worries

Singapore’s recent parliamentary debate over primary school admissions has put a familiar parental strategy in the city state under the spotlight – parents moving house to improve their children’s chances of getting into popular schools. Speaking with This Week in Asia, property agents say some families in Singapore have been approaching them with the intention of buying or renting particular residences at least two years before their children’s primary school admission. Living close to a...

As Indonesia faces MSCI downgrade threat, officials vow reforms to ease fears

As the threat of a reclassification by MSCI that could relegate Indonesia to an investment hinterland looms, the country’s financial regulators and stock exchange officials have vowed to address systemic concerns, including removing stocks with concentrated ownership. The global index provider announced on Friday it was launching a formal consultation to decide whether to downgrade Southeast Asia’s largest economy from “emerging market” to “stand-alone” status, similar to countries such as...

In Malaysia, viral air purifier test fans flames of anger over haze

As haze from forest fires in Indonesia continues to shroud Southeast Asia, Malaysians have taken to social media to air their grievances, with a video of an elevated outdoor reading from an air purifier among viral content marking public frustration. The clip, posted by user syahierarafie, shows a device detecting an Air Pollutant Index (API) of up to 318 in Gelang Patah, a suburban town in western Johor Bahru which borders Singapore. Malaysia’s opposition bloc declared invalid, but limited gains for Anwar

Malaysia’s main opposition coalition lost its registration on Tuesday, just 11 days before nominations for a state election, drawing accusations that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government is using state powers to cripple its rivals. The decision leaves Perikatan Nasional (PN) – already fractured by a bitter dispute between its Islamist anchor, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), and estranged partner Bersatu – fighting to preserve its electoral identity ahead of Melaka’s November 14...

GoTo’s 27B model speaks Batak, but the real test is who can afford to run it

For most of the generative AI boom, someone in North Sumatra typing a question in Batak Toba has been talking to a machine that, at best, half understands them. GoTo Group says it wants to change that. But the hard part is only beginning. Energy shock could spark Asia’s next debt crisis

A country need not run out of money to find itself in a debt crisis. It only has to run short of US dollars to pay for its energy. At the recent International Monetary Fund-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, the IMF, which expects global economic growth of 3.1 per cent this year and 3.4 per cent the next, cautioned that energy-importing and lower-income economies face a harder road, even as those riding the artificial intelligence boom fare relatively well. According to the World Bank’s...
